Dulce de Azucar (Sweet Sugar), originally a photo encaustic on wood titled Unskilled Labor, evokes a scene of quiet labor and rustic beauty amidst Puerto Rico's sugar cane fields. Through a unique blend of photographic imagery and richly textured mixed media, the artwork serves as a poignant reminder of the human element that was once inherent in sugar production before its industrialization, reflecting a vital chapter in Puerto Rico's cultural landscape. The original photograph used in this composite is one of my great-uncle’s, Lou Alers, a photojournalist on the island.
